PALERMO BEAT L.R. VICENZA ON PENALTIES TO REACH COPPA ITALIA THIRD ROUND

Palermo are through to the third round of the Coppa Italia after overcoming L.R. Vicenza in dramatic fashion at the Stadio Barbera on Sunday night.

Slobodan Rajkovic was the hero of the hour as he twice levelled for the Rosanero, before victory was eventually sealed in a penalty shootout.

The first 90 minutes looked set to finish goalless until the visitors were awarded a stoppage-time penalty, which Stefano Giacomelli duly converted.

Palermo hit straight back though, as Rajkovic headed in a 94th-minute equaliser to force extra time.

Alberto Tronco restored Vicenza's lead with a superbly struck effort in the 101st minute but the big Serbian headed home his second of the night three minutes from time to square it up again.

Palermo then ran out 5-4 winners on penalties, with Giuseppe Bellusci scoring the decisive spot kick.

Bruno Tedino's men will now travel to Cagliari in the third round next weekend.
